Just finished reading the chocolate detective story/expose that has been making the rounds and is being much discussed in coffee nerd circles as it parallels some of the deceptive marketing practices that crop up in the coffee biz. Well written (coining the Suessian term Sneetchcraft - possibly the next truthiness) and inspiring in me a deep craving to experience some of the better chocolates referenced in the article (which I will). Highly recommended to the three of my readers that haven’t already read it.

My nightstand reading has been Steven Johnson’s The Ghost Map about the cholera outbreak in Dickens era London while Emily is reading The Family That Couldn’t Sleep which explores the history of prion diseases. Pretty macabre stuff, but I’m a sucker geeky non-fiction and I’ve liked Steven Johnson since his days at the late great Feed Magazine.

Always there is coffee reading and always it sets me off on wide-ranging tangents. In reading deeper on the physiology of flavor perception I came across the recent article in Nature about the possibility that the sense of smell relies on a quantum mechanical phenomenon. The well-written blog Neurophilosophy gives a very good run down of the idea.
