congratulations Jim

James Hoffmann, World Barista Champion
The Hoff with his lovely pit crew of Stephen and Anette face the cameras on the L.A. stop of their recent whirlwind tour.

Coffee nerds can chalk up yet another reason to envy U.K. barista James Hoffmann; prolific blogger, donut alchemist, brilliant photographer, ladies’ man, and now World Barista Champion.

James is exceptional in that he has made it to the top as an iconoclast. No company sponsor primping him along his run, no stage mother pushing him into the pageantry (although Stephen Morrissey does have a strong maternal side). James has carved his own unique path to the top of the oddball world of career coffee pimps and I have no doubt his reign as champion will be an interesting one. Being unaffiliated with any coffee company, the offers are no doubt pouring in for James to put his face on bottles of syrup, endorse the latest pod machine, and serve as grand marshall of the Nescafe Frappe parade, but (as others are speculating) he probably has something more interesting in mind.

Best wishes to the new champ and his crew and all those partying with them in Tokyo. You can immerse yourself in the fantastic and continuing coverage from videobloggers Zachary & Katie and don’t miss Stephen’s epic video of last-minute milk tasting, a glimpse into the intense dedication of the Team U.K. pit crew.

    Indeed! Congratulations James!

I’ll second that notion about Morrissey’s maternal instinct…

Who is more famous? Jim Hoffman or Joey Chesnut, Hot Dog Eating champion at Coney Island?

  4. Steve Says:

    I Pray Jim :)

The fact that you had to write “Hot Dog Eating champion” may suggest something, at least in this circle. To the general public, I don’t know - both would probably get a “who’s that?” reaction. But that doesn’t take anything away from Hoffmann’s accomplishments. He captured a world title after all.
