Bob’s mocha

My latte art photos on flickr have turned up in many odd corners of the web. There are some decent examples of latte art in there, almost all of them captured on the fly at Victrola. A photo of a mocha poured by Bob has become my most viewed/favorited/commented on photo, with over 53,000 pageviews.

It appears in the latest issue of Barista Magazine (yes there is actually a magazine for baristas, and its actually really good). I gave them carte blanche to use my photos and am surprised to see this one chosen. Why? Well from a latte art purist’s perspective, the mocha lion is sort of cheating. Though it is possessed of much charm (and Bob’s creativity is nothing to sneeze at) latte etching - drawing designs onto the surface of the cup - requires less technical skill than free pour designs (of which Bob is also a master). Here I present the demystification of the mocha lion, revealing Bob’s process. Many think it looks like a bear. Kid’s love it, and apparently so do a lot of web junkies.

Bob is moving to New York City in a couple of weeks and will be missed greatly at Victrola by the staff and his legion of adoring teenage girl fans. If anyone has a line on some NYC gigs for a world class barista (Kevin, Ken… I’m looking at you) who also does films, drop me a line.
