what I’ve been up to

I’ve tried to avoid another one of those mea culpa posts where I provide some excuse for my lack of regular updates. I still feel like there are some big coffee essays percolating in my brain, but I always worry my personal coffee-obsessive esoterica requires some extra framing for my largely straight “readership”. I’m not sure what will come of that (a separate space on the blog for coffee specific ramblings?), but in the interim I present you with a sloppy linkdump of where my mental energy has been wallowing of late, in the hopes of jumpstarting some actual reblogination.

The current bedside reading is Erik Davis’s book on Led Zep IV, a rollicking bit of cultural spelunking. I’ve been reading his stuff for years, have had the pleasure of crossing paths with him at various events, and his Techgnosis is one of those books I lend out copies of faster than I can replenish.

In the coffee roasting realm there has been some experimentation and exasperation about airflow in the Diedrich IR-12 roaster. Sudden variance on the impeller speed threw me for a loop but has taught me a few things and led to some MacGuyver-esque modifications. I’ve probably gained a some grey hairs in the last week, but have added another level of granular control to our roast process.

The Katrina aftermath outrageousness grabs a lot of my attention. I thought I was pretty jaded as to the deplorable state of our so-called government, but this drops the jaw to the floor. Boingboing’s good coverage, my friend Joel’s blog, and the media clips on crooksandliars constitute the bulk of my feeding tube of scandalousness and are worth checking out.

Spending the weekend playing catch up on a couple of old projects.

you should just drop the coffee ramblings at will. your readership will follow.

A major part of the appeal of personal publishing is the voyeuristic aspect of being dropped into someone else’s obsessions. We might be straight, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t trying to “pass”.

Which is to say, bring the coffee esoterica whenever you want!
