Greece is the word
I’m flying to Athens, Greece tomorrow with Victrola barista trainer Kyle Glanville on a one week coffee consulting mission to bring the gospel of great espresso to the birthplace of Western Civilization. I’ll give the full story once I’ve finished preparations and packing (or while waiting in the airport) but here are some tantalizing details for my coffee fiend readers:
Brand new Diedrich IR-7 roaster in the shop.
Some spectacular green coffees.
One-of-a-kind 4 group La Marzocco GB5/FB-70 hybrid espresso machine.
2 Mazzer Robur grinders with 3-phase 220 motors.
One posse of very serious coffeegeek Greeks ready to bring it.
We’ll be posting reports and photos as often as we can both here and on the Victrola blog.
People are alternately telling us we must try this stuff called ouzo or to avoid it at any cost. It seems to be the first subject that comes up when I mention to anyone that I’m headed to Greece. Word is our hosts are fond of Belgian ales so the ouzo might remain a mystery.

3-phase Roburs: you can power them with a variable frequency drive (http://tinyurl.com/abybu) and experiment with the effect of RPM on cup quality!

Actually, the birthplace of western civilization is more accurately somewhere in the Levant, or Crete. The majority of our traditions, including our cow milk drinking ways, originate there.
Good ol’ archaeology classes…

Ouzo is good. Unless of course you can’t stand anise. But I like it, anyway. Don’t know much about it, different qualities of it, etc., but it’s nice to drink once in a while.

So who’s roasting back at Victrola? Was thinking of getting some beans. Should I wait till you get back?
