more airport ramblings
Sleep was a luxury easily rejected Monday night as a suite at the Hilton belonging to Sustainable Harvest became the late night site for some serious coffee folks to extend their chatter after all the bars had given us the boot. There is an intensity of dialogue that happens when these people intersect thats exhilarating and hard to say goodnight to. The future landscapes start to take shape in the ether waiting only to be articulated by those caught be the spirit of thing. Or at the very least a great deal of fun is being had.
From the outside looking in you might be inclined to view this eccentric, rag-tag, partying band of hard living big personalities as a gross antithesis to the poverty and struggle faced by millions in the coffee producing countries. But as you get to know these characters what you discover is an intense passion and ethic that goes miles deeper than any empty rhetoric on a bag of coffee or company mission statement. These people represent just a small sliver of the larger industry but there is a momentum to their ideas and a glimpse into a much better future for coffee from grower to consumer.
Clearly the sleep deprivation is sending me into overblown reverie. All manner of kool-aid has been foisted on me in the last few days and I’ve drunk my fair share. A good nights sleep and a proper meal of something that didn’t come from an airport magazine vendor then maybe a more balanced perspective may emerge.
